BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION AND RESTORATIVE PRACTICES-B.I.R.P

HOW IT WORKS

The Glover EmpowerMentoring (GEM) team provides an opportunity for reduction in suspension time to students with long term suspensions lasting a minimum of five days. GEM uses the understanding of the ABC (Attendance, Behavior, Course performance) early warning indicators as a guide for student success. Youth enrolled in this program will be given a chance to look at the behaviors that resulted in his or her suspension. By focusing on the root cause of the behavior and identifying goals, this will improve relationships. Coursework approved by Kent School District (KSD) will be accessible for students to complete math, science and language arts while they are not present on campus.

MEN ON THE MOVE

HOW IT WORKS

This program was instituted to create a space for student voice to help lead school and district improvement. Male students of color are currently impacted disproportionally by higher discipline rates, lower graduation rates and under representation in advanced courses. Men on the Move is designed to empower students who have been historically undeserved to work with the school district and their school staff to support their needs for academic and social emotional growth.

R.A.W. (READY AND WILLING) GEMSTONES

RAW GEMStones curriculum is built around the idea that “I have to see me in order to be me.” It builds visibility for various pathways to success by exploring the historical successes of the Black American experience and introducing youth to the resiliency that they also house within themselves.

HOW IT WORKS

This is accomplished by introducing the idea of how valuable a young person is to the environments they see themselves in constantly.  As one discovers self-worth, they in turn, gain personal responsibility for that worth. Through mentoring we uncover the Ready and Willing leader inside each youth that is waiting to be polished and placed in a setting for success.

R.O.O.T.S. REMOVING OBSTACLES TO OVERCOMING TRAUMA IN SCHOOLS:

DISCOVERING YOUR POWERFUL SELF

HOW IT WORKS

This is accomplished by creating a safe environment for varied life experiences, student voices, and cultures to be heard and supported. Youth are inspired to discover their full potentials by allowing them to openly discuss and share their personal understanding of their individual life experiences. This promotes a common understanding among each other.

GEM AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING-G.A.P.

The G.A.P program focuses on socio-emotional aspects of the school process. It gives the youth participants an opportunity to look at the issues that they deal with in school from a new perspective in attempt to help humanize the school staff. With a GEM staff member present twice weekly, the youth develop a functioning relationship with an adult who helps establish trust, compassion, and safety.
